My '72 is a 350/4 speed without power brakes. I've got plenty of go (built motor) but not enough stop, at least not enough for my tastes. The pads and rotors are stock bits. I really want to do something to make it stop better. Would I be better off replacing the brakes with cross drilled and slotted rotors and some form of performance brake pad (think Bendix Brute Stop), or would I be further ahead to just swap out the manual master cylinder for a power brake setup? Is the power brake conversion really as easy as just bolting on a power booster and master cylinder combo? Do I have to do anything to the brake pedal to make it work?
If you're considering the stock set up, order the '72 assembly instruction manual (AIM), go to the J50 options section, and study the installation instructions on how they did it at St. Louis. It will list the original part numbers, provide notes on installation, and also let you know what the differences are over manual brakes.
This is the best thing you can do for a C3s brake system. I had manual brakes and converted to this and never looked back.
Hey I'm with Gordon! I've done alot of research on this mod and it's way better than a vac boost,Hydratech sells complete kit or you can go to the junk yard or autozone and get any chevy truck hydroboost made in the late 80's or 90's to fit your car.I'm going with a new kit from hydratech about 550.00 __ Tom
