I have the thread saved for sealing the cowl area with charcoal heated non-rubberized roof pitch (almost sounds delicious...lol).
I have the pitch..the gloves and the BBQ pit...what I dont have is the "areas to avoid on a 1979" info.
I have read where the heated pitch is carefully and strategically poured into the cowl areas...my concern is any rain/water drain lines that would need to be avoided or taped.
I also notice some areas elsewhere on the car that I can brush some of this warm pitch on to seal that area.
As an old roofer, don't mess w/pitch. The stuff is very nasty and difficult to work with. I used some automotive rubberised undercoating. i did the undercarriage and the inner fenders as well as the cowl. leaks are gone and a touch up is easy.
Hello, I was the one that posted the tar repair. I'm not sure if "pitch" is the same I used, mine was labled (i think) just semi liquid roofing tar.
There are no drains I know of in that area that you have to worry about covering. It should just run down the sides. Make sure you have the area cleaned up and the screens removed from the sides. email me directly if you need to; frank@itpphoto.com

Thanks Frank.
the roof pitch vs. roof tar comes from rubberized w/fiber...it was hard to find just regular ole roof pitch that was totally oil based.
I didnt figure the rubberized would do well with being heated, but I knew the old style tar type did as thats how it ws applied to roofs back in the day..."Shaw Shank Redemption" comes to mind (the roof and beer scene).
Glad to hear there is no drain holes...I did have the screens out and looked with a flashlight...didnt see any holes...only the very obvious holes the size of a dime were in the very upper portion of the cowl area.
I seen those two holes, just didnt know if there was anymore.
Yes, please take pics and let us know how it goes. I am getting ready to do the same thing and need something to get into the hidden areas between the cowl corner and the fender. I have narrowed it down do using roofing tar, Plasti Dip liquid rubber(for coating tool handles, etc), and Permatex Flowable Clear Silicone Sealer. Just haven't made up my mind yet.
