Steering has lots of play both driving and sitting stationary. Had mechanic place car on rack, he said he thought it was gear.
Questions:
I would like to replace the unit, Where would you purchase the new/rebuilt unit?
Does anyone have directions or pictures of job?
I have the Haynes but it really doesn't say much. I have never done anything to any vehicle that is as simple as it would suggest.
I have never done steering work and understand I will need a pitman arm puller. How do you "pull" a pitman arm?
He "thought" it was the gear is not gonna get you repaired correctly, or remove "play/slack".
"Knowing" will.
It could just be as simple as a sector shaft adjustment, or replace the steering coupling.
then again it could be a couple of tie-rods ends, an idler arm, pitman arm...heck; the whole steering linkage could be shot.
You need to bring it to an alignment specialist that "knows".
But if you think you got it nailed to what the culprit is; do an advanced search, there is PLENTY of info already posted for repairs, and links for purchases.
If the gear box is a problem there will be lost motion while on center. You have to look at the travel as someone turns the wheel. There should be no lost motion between the wheel and the pitman arm.
Before doing anything major, take the lash out. You'd be surprised how many steering boxes get replaced or rebuilt when all they needed was a lash adjustment.

Noticed that I can turn my steering wheel about 2 inches when on center before the wheels move-
1. Could lash adjustment help this
2. And can someone who has never done it screw things up worse
