Default New door locks and ignition switch

I lost one of my door locks. The retainer clip must have come off and I just have a hole on the outside of my door covered with some masking tape.

I could just replace that one lock but then I'll have to carry around the odd extra key, besides my ignition lock is pretty old and worn.

If I buy a whole new set- door locks and ignition lock, how hard is the ignition lock to install??

It's not bad at all. You will need to remove the steering wheel and the plate that is behind it. You then use a pin of some sort(drive punch) to release it from the column. If at all possible, get a set of locks/ ign. cylinder that use the same key. I bought a complet car set and now have a key for the ignition, another for the doors and yet another for the center storage compartment behind the seat. It sucks

Go to http://www.bokonon.net/corvettefaq/ and look under Suspension and Steering. Depending if you have a standard (non-adjustable) steering column or a T&T, look up the directions and pictures on how to disassemble the column. It will tell you how to remove and replace the ignition lock cylinder.

Once you have the ignition lock cylinder out of the column, I don't know if a locksmith can rekey it to match your doors.

Go check with a Chevy dealer, you can get the lock cylinder to replace the missing one, and a new original key to fit them all. You should only have to install the new one in the door.

Steve,
Why not just buy the door lock you need to replace the one you lost and BEFORE you install it, take it to a locksmith and have it keyed to match your existing key for the other door and ignition.
That way you have the same setup as when it was original and you only carry the one key.
I am doing the same thing on my 68 because thieves butchered the passenger door lock while trying to steal the car.
Change the new lock to match your existing (old) key.

Thanks for the input from everyone.

The only reason I was considering replacing all locks was that the ignition lock is very worn and I can take the key out sometimes and can still turn the ignition.

I'll let you know what I end up doing.

Hey Jim,

That's a great link of well documented Corvette instructions. That's a keeper in my favorite Corvette places.

Everyone else should do the same.

Thanks
