I have my trans at a local machine shop getting rebuilt. They gave me a call today and said there is an overdrive kit for the muncie which would replace all 4 gears and give me an 18% reduction in RPMs in gears 3 & 4...for $600! I have a 3.70 rear gear.
I'm already paying $350 for the rebuild. Thats $950 on the trans!
Not sure what it would cost for a brand spankin new 5spd or 6spd but would my money be better spent on one of those instead of the 4spd?
Where's the best prices for the new 5psd 6spds?
I'm only concerned with this now b/c of the rising gas prices.
But on the flip side I hate the idea of sacrificing some hp with the overdrive kit.
Any thoughts? Anyone use one of these overdrive kits on their muncie??
Do not waste your money on an "over drive kit." You might get better gas mileage, but your acceleration will go down the drain due to higer gear ratio. Save your money and invest in a 5 or 6 speed. That way you can keep low gear ratios and still have an over drive, or double overdrive (6speed).
...replace all 4 gears and give me an 18% reduction in RPMs in gears 3 & 4...
Without a matching reduction in first and second gears, you'll have a huge RPM drop from second to third, and wishing for a gear between these two. Might as well go for a 5 spd.
Go out and drive your car and shift it 1 - 2 - 4. and see how you like it. All they do with the Muncie OD kit is make 3rd gear the OD gear and flip the linkage on the 3-4 shifter shaft upside down so it really goes into 4th instead of third. When you shift to what WAS 4th it goes into third which is now an overdrive gear. I drove one recently and it was terrible. The 2nd to 4th gap is huge. Just wait until you have enough dough to go for a 5 or 6 speed Tremec. Personally, if I had a 3.36 rear end I would go for the 4616 TKO 500 (26" tire at 70 mph about 2100 rpm) or the 5009 TKO 600 (26" tire at 70 mph about 2000 rpm) The deciding factor between these two choices would be first gear. The 500 has a 3.27 first and the 600 has a 2.87 first. Spend the money life is too short!

My thoughts exactly...Thanks
Where can I get a good 6spd for the best price?
The Viper 6 speed is no longer available to the aftermarket (you can thank Chrysler for that) so the TKO II is the easiest option to obtain. Keisler claims it is a stronger unit compared with the 6 speed. One of their folks relayed a tidbit of info about a comparison between to two.
He said the 6 spd is rated for 600ft/lbs Peak, whereas the 5 spd is rated at 600ft/lbs continuous. Another story he relayed was that Tremec put a 5 spd box on a transmission dyno for the purpose of loading it to the failure point to see where it would break, the bellhousing mounting ears sheared at 1400ft/lbs (take all this with a grain of salt ).
I've had mine (TKO600) now for several months, had to replace a failed 700R4, and I have really enjoyed it. It shifts like a dream with a very positive feel, meaning I wouldn't describe it as something you'd find in a luxerey sedan with a buttery feel, more like something you'd expect to find in a purpose built high performance vehicle, with definite notches between the gears.
