Re: Advancing timing - what is the practical limit (Paul 75 L82)
The one part that was missed and Lars himself didn't mention is the stock springs. If you use the stock springs and try to get total advance of 36 @3000, you'll end up with to much initial. You need a lighter set of springs.
An additional comment about the track testing is to keep changing to a lighter spring until you max acceleration speed.

Of course, you should mention that you are talking about the mechanical advance springs, NOT the valve springs!!!

Re: Advancing timing - what is the practical limit (lars)
Good answers as always. Glad to see members getting that kind of help. I would buy you one too but it's too far for me also  This reminds me of the time I burned a hole in a motorcycle piston. It was only an 80 cc and I was a young adult so it was over loaded and the cops don't really like dirt dikes on the street soooo.... I was running it WFO for as long as I could until my buddy and the cop went by. I turned around to go the other way and blaaaa the engine died. When I took it apart the piston had a hole in it the size of your pinky. The spark plug was gone. The whole electrode was eatin(new word) away. The top of the piston had dings in it. PREIGNITION
It must have been one big fire ball in there

Larry82 -
My experience has always been that I get pinging with timing advanced too much.
Yes - that's right. I meant to say that you start from a retarded setting and advance until pinging is heard, then back down a bit. Sorry for the poor wording. When under load, the system will advance the timing quite a bit.
