Someone needs to design a spreader to fit a big block while still retaining the stock fan. I would hate to have to change to an electric fan just to install the spreader bar.

Hate ... no way ... electric fan is the best thing I've added.
It cleans up the front of the engine SO much.
That said, I need to build a spreader bar, too.

TT Your setup fits the style of the car, and you have adjustable upper A-Arms. I like it....

I'm going out to the garage now and chop up a new set of hooker side tubes to get then a bit shorter...

Will you have to use an electric fan with your spreader bar, Twin Turbo?

yeah, but not only because of the spreader bar. In fact, the bar may just have cleared a stock fan but the radiator is further back on mine and sloped at a significantly steeper angle. <1% stock on my car.

OK Marck,
I have been measuring and making a parts list to make the spreader bar. You guys can cause a fellow to have to do a lot of work. Norval coat me a perfectly good TH350 that is sitting in the garage now; but I do like the 5 speed. Looks like I'm going to have to remove components on both sides of the engine to get the spreader bar mounted after I get the brackets welded up and powder coated. Because of you guys I never seem to get finished!

This design with flat stock is a good design. The forces are not creating a bending moment but also look how thick the material is.

Twin turbo without heim joints how do you adjust the length of the bar?? It can NOT be fixed for US since ours go over the A arms. Yours I assume is fixed to the frame so no need for adjustment but what about preloading???

Why would I want to preload my shock towers? It's nowhere near as flexy as the stock a arm mounts, my spreader bar is just ther to keep the towers and engine subframe from bending inwards

It's the same as this:

just that one isn't removable. Same function, no preload..just keeps the towers from bending in. I made it removable so I have access to stuff that's down there like the steering box and such and also it makes removal of the engine easier.

Think about this, If a preload is desirable, would putting the car on jack stands allow the weight of the suspension to spread the towers just a little.
If a non adjustable bar is advantageous one could be built cheaper than buying rodends and tapped tubing.
Small square tubing could be used to make the bar and brackets that would bolt together. With the car on stands the location of the bolts could be marked to keep that load on the towers when the car was lowered onto the wheels.
If prelead isn't needed it could still be fabricated to just bolt in.

What happens if you go for an alignment and the guy wants to add shims?? How does the bar move or shorten to take into account for the shims???? No we need an adjustment.

I guess I will go with the rod ends. It will be easier to make this way too.

I just checked the clearance for the spreader bar behind the fan. The fan blocks me from installing the bar directly over the from A-arm bolts. I will have to move the bracket back a couple inches to clear the fan and shroud. Now I wish I had an aluminum rad and spals. Still, this will be a fairly easy job once i get the brackets mocked up.

Check my earlier post in this thread for what you are about to do. I used 2" X 3/8''wide S/S flat bar for the base. The base mounts 1/2'' down from the top and the Bar is mounted 1 1/2" from the top. This was necessary to clear the pulley. I do not think it will work with the 1" flat bar base like the VBP. PM me if you need specifics.

C69vete,
Thanks for the information. I am mocking it up with pvc pipe to see where the bar needs to be in relation to the bracket. Your info will simplify the process! Nothin' better than the help you get on this forum!
Thanks again!
