Len,
Its my understanding that when you ordered 3:70 and up gears as a option (special high performance) they came with larger carrier and heavier components, axles etc. All solid lifter BBs should of had the good stuff in them because of the torque they dished out, but you had to get the optional SHP gears to complete the package.

456 is hard to find and rediculous. I just pulled a set and even combined with .68 overdrive the car was a dog on the highway. Not to mention combined with a 3.35 first gear you didn't cross an intersection without shifting.
I have had 3.08, 355, 373, 411 and 456 and recommend nothing more then 355 on the street without overdrive and found 411 with overdrive tolerable on the open road but NOT off the line.
Norval, for those of us in the mid 400hp range do you think 4.11s would be tolerable with 255s? How about 4.56? Have you only run these gears with your 1000hp engine?
I have a .5 OD in 6th so I think cruising would be fine with either.
Without OD 4.11 is pretty worthless. The more power you have the less you want to shift. Shifting takes time and the loss of traction in powerful cars like yours.
It will make first and second gear nearly worthless.
If I didn't have OD I would install a 2.73 rear end. My 67 Camero has a 4 speed/2.73 rear. It's a little tough to launch because it's only a mild ly hot rodded 355 ci. Once it hooks it's great.
