Guys, I just took my vette for a drive and got half way to the insurance place and the car died. I noticed the carb was full of gas... So I'm thinking float...
I pulled the top of the carb and noticed some crap in the bottom of the bowls that I should clean out. Also, when i give it lots of gas a far amount of fuel pours out the primary venturi boosters, is that normal?
But I noticed one thing that is odd. Where the float pushes up to shut the gas off on the needle and seat assembly I noticed they were hard to move and stuck, should they move freely?
the needle should move without any drag in the seat, if it has any dirt or rust in it it will stick. there is a screen in the needle and seat that can be seen when the seat is removed to keep big debris out of the needle and seat. remove the N&S and blow the passages out with compressed air, the float level is 3/8" from the float to the gasket. put a inline filter (with a paper element) between the fuel pump and the carb to keep the junk out of the carb. if you are using a aftermarket fuel pump such as a Holley check the fuel pressure 6 1/2 lbs is the maximum most carbs should use (some people like more but then you risk flooding)
Re-check your float setting; the correct drop is shown in your Edelbrock manual that came w/the carb. Be very careful when replacing the top of the carb, that the float doesn't doesn't hang up on the gasket.....the floats should move freely.
Thanks guys, I clean the bowls. I will check the screens for crap. I have a inline fuel filter but its not a paper element type jsut a screen. Also I am using an edelbrock fuel pump. I think it was jsut crap making the float stick. I will check the float levels before I reisntall.
When fuel in injected from the primaries where does it come from? Does it drip in from the primary venturi boosters? ANd just get a shot from the primary jet housing?
the screen type filter do not filter all that good, sometimes they offer a optional element that actually filters but i would use a AC or other major brand paper filter.
when a piece of debris sticks the needle and seat open it will cause the fuel level to be so high in the fuel bowl that it will leak thru the venturi cluster into the throttle bowl
check the fuel pressure often times the edelbrock fuel pumps will have 7, 8, or 9 lbs of fuel pressure so yu may need a fuel pressure regulator.
Right now Im using the Earls inline fuel filter 2030206, 85 micron filter. Im thinking I should install a different one. My old quadrajet had a paper filter in it, but the Q-jet is not working.
Any suggestions? Perferrably with 6AN males ends...
my main point would be if debris made it thru the filter it must not be much of a filter and i would always suggest to flush the fuel line with fresh fuel by cranking the motor since it is a mechanical pump. pump the fuel into a can and look for debris but be carefull with the fuel and disable the spark YOU DO NOT WANT A FIRE
