Default Fuel Pump

Does anybody have any tips on changing the fuel pump? Does the plate behind the fuel pump have to be removed?

Check out the articles at
http://www.corvettefaq.com

One of them is a bad link - dont know what the article is supposed to be.

The other one is a corvettemagazine article on a 74 fuel pump replacement.

The broken link was a link to scanned image (in someone's photopoint album) of the install instructions that came with their pump. For some reason the album has been removed. If anyone still has this scan, please let me know and I'll host it directly on corvettefaq.com.
thanks!

BTW, when replacing mine I did have to remove the plate because the fuel pump rod fell down and I had to remove plate to get at the rod.

The corvettemagazine article recommends using vaseline to hold the rod up out of the way (which apparently works for a few seconds). What I did (and is documented in my cam install page here: http://www.bokonon.net/corvette/cam2.html) was remove the bolt in front of the block and replace that bolt with a longer bolt (that was long enough to gently hold the pushrod in place while I took my time installing the fuel pump). You may want to try this method if you are not having luck with the pushrod staying in place.

good luck!

Don't screw with the grease trick, it doesn't really work and if you have AC it is a bear getting the pump bolts started. Do as said above, pull the bolt on the front of the block and use a longer one to hold the rod. I think if you rotate the engine until the rotor is facing the firewall, that will give you the greatest clearance for the pump rod. Pull the front wheel, and get or build up 1/4" extensions to about 10-12" then you can get to the bolts, from the top of the frame. Some people say to use studs for placement of the fuel pump, I just didn't have luck trying them. Instead, I looked real careful and saw when the fuel pump and block bolt hole lined up and got the first bolt started, then moved the pump until the other one lined up. I tightened the bolts equally on each side in small amounts until reaching torque spec. Oh... don't forget to pull the longer bolt and replace with the original bolt.

Good luck and keep us informed.
