Well into the interior rebuild now and am doing everything I can to remedy cockpit heat issues while I have it apart. Noticed yesterday on the shifter mechanism (auto tranny) that there is a rotted out ring of soft rubber remnants around the edge of the shifter mechanism under the ring that holds everything in place. I've dug around but can't seem to find exactly what it is is officially called or where I can get a replacement before I reassemble everything.
I'm sure it was there at one time to block heat and crud coming up from the tranny into the console and cockpit and I'd like to find a new one to re-seal that big giant hole in the floor before I put everything back.
It looks like I'd just unscrew all the bolts on the ring and lift it all off and put the new barrier in then replace it all. Most catalogs show something called a "shifter boot" but that is a trim piece that is visible on the inside which matches the interior color. Mine didn't have one but if I can't find that rubber replacement dam, would a shifter boot do the same thing?
Lower shifter boot; might also be called a seal. Removing the screws and the retainer should allow excess to the remnants of the old one. There may be some type of adhesive around the edges.
