Default I need to interpet a cast iron vette diff

An aquaintance has what he thinks is a big block 4.11 differential that has sat under his workbench in plastic for over 20 years. This is a guy that all of us 'kids' used to admire with his 66 black 427 4-speed vette that he would take the engine out of each winter, disassemble, clean and re-assemble for the spring/summer. I've been talking with him over coffee up at the town diner and I happened to be hitting some garage sales and found him in his driveway working on an old moped. He has an on-going dual quad, '65 Buick powered Stuedbaker truck project in his garage; one of those dream garages with heat, insulation, lots of bench space and tons of spare parts from his decades of hot rodding. Oh, and all of the neat tools needed for body work/fab (mig, oxy/acetalyn, etc.)

Anyway, here are the codes from the diff housing:

2 FB 1 17 68 W

And from the ring gear:

3733908 9:37 followed by GM 9-67 1

I am considering taking it off his hands as the diff is immaculate inside/out and includes side yokes that have been rebuild by Mid-America with the 'button ends', a reinforced rear cover by Muskegon Brakes. Also, he will throw in the immaculate Cross mount that fits betw the diff and the frame as well as the steel tongue piece that attaches the front of the diff to the frame via a rubber mount.

What's reasonable for such a find? I would like to buy it and maybe sell it OR act as an intermediary for a sale OR it may end up under my work bench for another 20 years...

ALSO, he has 2-3 Edelbrock small block 'Scorpion' single-plane manifolds in immaculate shape, a nitrided forged steel LT1 crank from a 71-72 LT1 and what appears to be a Z-28 350 block (no internals) with the 4-bolt main caps and oil pan splash shield (no oil pan). he says block has never been bored. He then mentioned he had a complete small block that he once ran in a '76 vette that he wanted to part with but was wrapped in plastic and hadn't been run in years... I believe that if I'd stayed for another beer he may have found a few more parts he wanted to sell

It is definately a 4.11:1 set up. The FB in the casting represents "Heavy-duty Positraction" from a 1968 w/ 427. According to my book a ring gear with 37333908 is from a rear with 4.11 gears. The pinion should be stamped 3885945. The pinion should have 9 teeth and the ring gear should have 37 teeth. Kind of rare as the 4 series carrier is not very plentiful. The other numbers are date codes. I'm not sure what to tell you to offer him for it - just ask him what he thinks is fair. You may get a great deal or your feelings hurt.

considering the price of gasoline as of late it`s not a rare find (at least not in my mind), also consider that restorers restamp EVERYTHING differentials included. I have a NON matching numbers, freshly rebuilt 4:11 I have been trying to sell for years now with NO takers.

He's asking more than I want to pay for all three items (diff, cross mount and the tongue mount); $500. Was just wondering if it would be something in demand; to turn around in re-sale to somebody wanting to do a resto. With his background, It is definitely an original item (not restamped).

4 series carriers are not bringing much if anything these days. With gas, OD trannies, the 4 series is left prettymuch for the NCRS type who wants an original one but how many were setup like that to start?
I had one sitting here and Pat Ikerd has about 50 of them he told me a few weeks ago.
