I am just now starting my chevy 350 for the first time. what do i need to do before firing?
I know i need cylinder 1 at top dead center.
but what do i do about the distributer?
its a 74' with an HEI distributor
After finding TDC I installed the distibutor with the #1 & #8 plug wires facing forward and inlined, the vacuum advance facing between the passinger side of the carb and the trans vacuum line. I had to us a long screw driver to clock the oil pump shaft so the rotor would be close to the #1 distributor post, that got me close enough for fire-up and brake in.
Whem primeing the motor I mark on the primeing pump shaft the direction of the keyway in the oil prime shaft. Then it is a simple matter of figureing out where to turn oil pump so that the distributor is pointing at number 1 and allready properly engaged in the oil pump. You can tighten down the distributor so that it can barely turn to set your timeing when motor is fired up, houstonvett
