Depends on lots of things....Stock un-touched Heads? Factory manifold? Has the deck been done? What are the pistons?

Get whoever is milling your heads to correct for manifold fit, also. There is a formula for correction per amount milled but I don't have it handy (maybe someone can chime in). When AFR milled mine, they made the intake angle correction so any stock angled intake bolts on with no modification.

What are the specs for the cam you are going to be installing? Porting and polishing will only help if the cam and CR support the extra fuel and use it efficently. If this is going to be used as a street car with under a .500 gross lift cam 9.5 CR might be best to leave the ports alone and just clean them up. You can actually lose tourque(HP) by haveing a huge intake runner in the manifold and no cam and CR to support it's use. The oval port heads are a very good head for the street. Square ports heads will flow more above 6500 rpms then the oval ports. If you're not going to be running 6500 rpms 70% of the time stick with the oval poarts use the money for something else, houstonvett

Try a Comp Cams P/N 11-246-3 Hydraulic Cam Flat Tappet....a good dual pattern cam for the BB,,,,,Just set and forget it! Better with a 4spd than turbo 400. Are you going to be adding headers? They will help the upper end a bit....additionally they will boost midrange torque.

the cam is #60202 219/227 at.050-262/268 duration w/530/542 lift. its a BB m21 4spd and a 3.70 rear. hedman's headers and stock intake with a lars-erated q-jet.

If it is going to be a street motor I would stay with the oval port heads and maybe go to a bigger intake valve. 2.25 should do the trick. You want your intake syatem to be 99% efficent in what the cylinder burns in the combustion cycle. Fuel that doesn't combust in the cylinder decreases HP. Should be a very nice street engine when you are done, good low end and midrange HP, houstonvett

Ok Red, i don't know how much u can take off the heads before the intake won't sit down and seal, but the stock '71 was 9:1 c.r. and 'bout right for that cam. Most cyl heads rebuild include a small shave to clean up the head for sealing with gasket.
But my 2 cents are a good (3 or 4) angle vlv job and pocket porting are the most cost effective and should help.

So what happened to that electrical problem? I thought i read it turned into a broken fuel pump. Sounds now like u just can't let that cam sit on the shelf anylonger. Hope u can afford new tires often too.
