Default Need help with rear disks..!!..

Okay, after beating on the car for a while I decided to get on the computer and find an answer to my problems. I removed the rear wheels last night to begin work on fixing the parking brakes that currently do nothing. The drivers side took a little hammering on the rusted on disk, but eventually came off. The passenger side refused to budge. So I did a search and apparently I have to drill the rivets out, what the heck is with the rivets anyways.?. The drivers side didn't have any in it. I knew I should have checked here before I started.

So my question is no longer how do I get it off, but How IMPORTANT are the rivets? Can I just reinstall the disk and titen the wheel down and call it a day, or do I have to put new rivets in?

Any help would be great.

after you get the rivets out you don't need to put any back in.

exact thing on my 72, the rivets were out on the right had to drill them out on the left. I used a uni-bit on mine, just drill out the centers, finish your brakes and don't woory about the rivets,Terry

The rivets are part of the factory assembly where the spindle and rotor were turned as one to eliminate rotor runout and brake fade from air pumping into the system. If the rivets were removed then someone has been in there. Maybe the rotor was replaced? The SS shoes kits will get you a working PB but you have to check the runout and get it under .002" better closer to .000". I just rebuilt original arms and had to drill out the rivets. When I assembled them I re-used the rotors and after I cleaned them up the runout was .000-.001" I never use the lug nuts only to mount them as this will change the runout everytime you mount a wheel. Instead bolt the rotor on, dial it in and it's done. works as good as rivets but you can service the PB much easier in the future.
You can do it fast, do it average, or do it right.

Thanks for all the help guys. I just got everything back together. I am going to replace the rotors and pads this weekend. I had to order them so i just went ahead and put it all back to gether to see if i had fixed the Parking brake. Works like a charm, for the first time ever.

Thanks again guys. Your help is very much appreciated.

If you search the archives you'll see that some guys have replaced the rivets with screws.
