What is really the rule of thumb on gaskets for like water pumps and intake manifolds ,oil pans etc. using the newer style gaskets. Some say no need for any kind of gasket sealers, and some say it is O.K to use sealers ???

The gasket does the sealing so there is no real need for sealer. Although many techs will use a sealer or an adhesive on one side to hold it in place until the component is installed.
