Can you only run one mechanical advance spring in a HEI distributor? If I put the lightest (black) springs in from my re-curve kit I can only get the RPM's down to 3800 @38* total timing. If I only put one of the next spring up (gold) I can get it down to 3000RPM at 38* total timing. I distributor is lubed up and does not seem to bind anywhere. I am using a Proform distributor. Can I run just one spring or will this cause a problem?
As far as I know, the golden springs are the lightest ones and the black ones are the heaviest ones..
It must depend on which re-curve kit you get, because when I put the gold springs in full advance does not happen until over 4000RPM. With the black springs in I get full advance at 3800RPM.
Something is wrong. Perhaps the wieghts and/or plate are installed upside down or they are binding. In a counterclockwise application(eg Pontiac's) the wieghts and the center plate are flipped. Some of the stock weights cannot be installed the wrong way, but the center plate can.
you can buy a delco # 1894333 shaft kit that is the performance replacemt part from gm it has 22 crankshaft degrees of advance with med heavy spring it has the advance is in at 3800 rpm we use two blue msd springs to get a quick curve (2800-3100)
