Default Got Timing Light, Now What?

Just got an Inductive timing light. What should I use for a hot lead? I can't reach the batt, what's my choices? TIA

CAREFULLY on the alternator, the red lead on the back is the one to use, BUT, its very close to the valve cover and yu can easily short battery to ground there.

This is how I connect my timing light. Get the positve on the positive lead of the alternator. Be careful not to let that lead touch the casing of the alternator body at the same time when making the positive connection. You can get the ground connection at any place there is bare metal, I use the loop that holds the alternator wiring as my ground.

Wah, you guys are wimps. Shorting hot to ground is a fun and inexpensive way to weld things.

I have an extra car battery, that I recharge once a month, I use. I place the battery on the ground and connect the battery clips. Has worked fine for me over the years.

If your car has a hood light: I got a connector that mates to it with short wires in order to power the timing light. The hood light connector is on the front of the left front wheel well....

Your right...thats too funny!...

Just hook it to the alternator lug. It's right there on the side you need to use the light, and reduces the distance you have to run the cables. The alternate source would be the horn relay. As with anything working on this type of machinery..know what your doing and be careful..If your unsure, find a friend who can help you.

I used jumper cables until I read about using the alternator here on the forum. That has worked fine for me... but, where is the horn relay?

oh, and Taijutsu... new timing light? Unfamiliar with it? The clothespin clip goes all the way AROUND the #1 wire. I tried clipping it onto the wire.... and that doesn't work!! I even took the thing back and exchanged it for a new one before I figured out what an idiot I was!!!

Well, I'm not a wimp, two weeks ago I hooked up my timing light to the hot wire lead and shorted on the altenator case and I fried my fuse link at the starter I have the craftsman light with adjustable advance, I wish they would make leads long enough for a corvette.

Somebody FINALLY got smart and made a cordless timing light, runs off D-cell batteries. Flaming River Industries, less than 60 bucks.
