Default 74 air conditioning help needed?

Nice warm day and the car has never run better. Had the air conditioning (original) on and it was blowing just cool air. After an hour or so heard what sounded like a fan belt squeel, the tack dropped about 1500 rpm. and I noticed a burning oil like smell. As I pulled to the side of the road I saw white smoke coming up between the hood and right front fender. Turned off the car and opened the hood latch. Wasn't sure what I was going to find. Air compressor was hot and smoking as oil/fluid was leaking out the front. After I got everything turned off and cooled down the car re-started and got me home. Honey will not ride in hot car this summer so it must be repaired. Car has original R-12 system which as you know is no longer around but car is original and I would kinda like to keep it looking that way. Is it best to get my original air compressor rebuilt, or order a NOS from parts house or go after market? Not sure best place to get such parts. Either way seems like a good time to change the evaporator. Understand that is a good idea when air conditioning is up graded to accomodate a more modern/available refrigerant like R-34. Not sure where to start? Any help is appreciated.

you can get a replacement compressor anywhere and get the system changed to R134a for a couple hundred. Will look like original, no problem.

Also you need to:

1. Test system with a vacuum pump. (Leakage test)
2. Change the expansion valve for an adequate one for the new refrigerant.
3. Remember to clean tubes prior refrigerant charge.

Default A/C Compressor

The compressor went in my 77 a few years ago. I got one that was rebuilt for 134a from Zip's, put it in, drew a vac. and added some 134a. It has been blowing cold air ever since. Some of the older A/C setups had differnt setups and may require other changes.. The are some r-12 substitutes out there also. I used this in my old Datsun Z two years ago and it worked fine. http://autorefrigerants.com/co00033.htm

My 75 has a new/rebuilt (in the box) compressor that I thought I needed...as it turned out I didn't. It was installed for about 2 weeks, while the original was checked out.

If you are interested I can sell it to you for $125 + shipping. I paid $325 when I bought it 2 months ago.
