I have a 1968 Convert. 327/350 4 speed all matching. The frame is rusted out bad and I am going to get a new one. I have about $6k left to work with. I need to bring the engine back to regular specs (running but tired). Thinking of a suspension makeover and engine rebuild.
Suggestions?
Use springs front and rear with as little spring pressure as you
can find and use big sway bars as a means for good handling, use
poly bushings in the sway bars. I would stay with rubber in the
control arms unless you are really in to corner carving all the time.
This will give you a good combination of good ride and handling, don't
fall into the trap of bigger is better when it comes to sping rates.
If this will be a street car only, weekend hard driver. Will the stock suspension be adequet and how can I tell if the springs are still good and any other components to be re-used? The rear struts are both bent upward which will need to be replaced. The body comes off Wednesday. Just need to find a frame. I have found a couple of places thart sell them and figured if I had the bare chasis to upgrade everything if needed.
I'm assuming your car came with the base suspension. The springs
have lost spring pressure over the yrs depending on miles and just
sitting on the springs at rest for all these yrs. Go ahead and find
new springs that are close to the original spring rate. try a 1/18
front bar with a 9/16 rear bar. or you could go with 1 1/4 up front
and a 5/8 rear bar, if you go with a 3/4 bar at the rear wth the
1 1/4 front bar you may have overstear problems. You would probably
be happy with the 1 1/8 front 9 1/6 rear. get poly bushing in your new
rear strut bars.

What about the VB&P max performance suspension with monspring in front and back, a-arms sway bars etc. The complete kit for $2300. Overkill for non racer?
