I have just about all the knowledge to transplant my ZZ4 into my 74 4spd with the exception of what fly wheel and starter to use. I know I can't reuse my original fly wheel so do I go with the 153 or 168 toothed? Also do I need staggered or inline starter?
Last additional question, I don't have the money for the Demon Carb I want so do you think my current 650 CFM Holley will work OK? I did the Holley math where you multiply CID and Max RPM and divide by 3456. Accordingly the 650 CFM carb should be OK. Thanks for any input.
How do I know which bell housing to use? I know I can/should wait until I pull the engine and tranny but would like to do the research now. Thanks for the reply.

IIRC 74 came with 168T. If your 74 came OE with a 4spd ... your OE bellhousing should work with either 153T or 168T flywheels. Only flywheels for later '86-up one-piece rear main seal cranks will fit ZZ4 ... flywheels for older (2-piece rear main seal crank) motors will not even bolt up to ZZ4 crank.

-edit-still, you must match starter to fw ... 153T = straight, 168T = staggered. You MUST ENSURE the block is drilled for whatever starter you're gonna use ... not all blocks are drilled for both starter patterns ... check that FIRST ... AFAIK, only way to check pattern(s) is with starter removed. 650 Holley is both plenty and a good choice for street ZZ4 ... local rules require we run 390 4bbl & 350 2 bbl Holley on circle trackers w/ ZZ4 ... they still make 350+ HP on 110 octane.
For a carburetor for my ZZ4, I bought a Holley 750, GM part 12485506. I think GM sold a limited number of complete ZZ4's and used this carburetor. For a ministarter, I bought a GM 12361146. This ministarter can be used for either 12.75 inch (153 tooth) or a 14 inch (168 tooth) flywheel. I bought a flywheel for my ZZ4 out of the GM part catalog. I can't find the part number. I think it was the 153 tooth wheel. My 68 bellhousing seems to work fine. I used a stock 68 bellhousing dustcover, however I had to increase the diameter for the crank bearing cutout. (I used an air powered nibbler to cut the dustcover cutout.) The ZZ4 crank bearing housing is much larger in diameter than the old two piece bearing. I tried to fit a late model dustcover, but it wouldn't match up with my 68 bellhousing.
