Default Edelbrock Install Problems

I have a 75 Corvette and it is completely stock. I am trying to replace the stock quadrajet with a new Edelbrock performer. First problem I encountered was the EGR valve was in the way so, I took it off and sealed all channels leading into the intake manifold. After I have everything connected, PCV, distributor vacuum advance, throttle linkage, etc... I tried to start it. The engine revved really high then gas squirted out of the carb and the engine died. I was wondering if anyone has any advice. Is the stock mechanical fuel pump providing too much fuel pressure? Thanks for any help.

Relocate the EGR using a plate designed just for this purpose from Edlebrock. RE the flooding- tap on the tops of the carb with the wooden handle from a small hammer, or the plastic end of a medium screwdriver. Then crank it over. Tap again on each side at the top and then start it up. Read the book that came w/the carb if you have it because the prob is described therein.
