Default Powder coated side pipes?

Anyone ever heard of taking the black Hooker side pipes and headers and having them powder coated? I would think that powder coating would hold up better than a thin layer of paint. Any thoughts?

Powder coating is a heat-applied process, which generally requires about a 400F temperature to set. There are high-temp powders which undergo a chemical reaction at the setting temperature and then won't re-melt until a much higher temperature, but I've never used them. Standard powder coat will remelt at the working temp.

Best bet is to call a powder coating shop and talk to them. If they don't work with high-temp powders, they should know someone who does.

Hello,
I am familiar with powder coating.(20+years). As a general rule of thumb, powders are removed from metal substrates that require re-coating at 800 degrees F. Not quite sure of header temps. but I personally would not use powders in this application. Companies are now offering high temp powders. I would ask questions around specific chemistry, i.e. epoxy, hybrid, etc. Each chemistry has its benefits and downsides for an application. Most important with powder is that the quality of the coating is very dependant on the substrate and its preperation. Ask any potential supplier alot of questions. Hope this helps.

What about Jet-Hot? With the forum discount, it is reasonably priced...

Does Jet-Hot do black?
I thought they only did the "ceramic" color.

Have you ran them yet? I'd be concerned that the coating might start to melt again.

I had my headers "ceramic coated" and they still look like new.
I've tried Jet-Hot with no luck, however ceramic coating on the side pipes works great and comes in silver, black or titanium.

I haven't run those yet but I have on a motorcycle exhaust and it is holding up really good. It's a high temp coating (I believe high silicon content)

No problem, I thought I had the pic there (I saw you posted before I could correct myself ). The outlet is 2.5, they are stock C4 manifolds I cut the air tubes off and welded up then powder coated w/ a high temp powder.

Thanks...

Roger's 2937, What problems did you have with Jet-hot? I am thinking of having mine coated by them.
