Goin down the road yesterday and all of the sudden it starts rattling and clattering, looses power and finally dies. I get out to look and the radiator cap is sitting on the control arm and all my water is gone! :( I was going about 80 on the freeway and it happened so fast I didn't realize what was happening until it was too late. Well , went and got water, waited for it to cool. Now it seems like it's only running on five and it making a god aweful rattling noise. I suspect I blew head gaskets but I won't know the extent of the damage until I get the motor out and appart. I figure I need to have the heads magnifluxed and checked for warp anyway. If it got way way too hot I coulda spun mains and or hurt the bottom end in some other horrific way. Everyone please say a prayer to the Corvette Gods for me, this could get ugly. :cry
In my case it was worse than I thought. Brought it over to the mechanic on
a flatbed, and he started her up and said: "ROD BEARING..."
Had her rebuilt, and now it runs like a dream...
yeah, the gauge was working but appearantly the thing won't register if there's no water running across it. It was reading about 210 when this happened. Not to bad considering the outside temp was about 107 and I had been idleing in traffic. Of course, on the bright side, this might be the time to consider dropping in a 383 kit.
