Guys,
had a leaky power steering pump so I picked one up last week and started removal today, got it out, royal PITA, now how do I get the pulley off???? Thought it would be a set screw or keyway or something. I have a gear puller but it doesnt fit right. The shaft on the pump is threaded internally and the gear puller slips inside, its a little small. Is there a special tool for this???
Thx ESU
Went to auto zone tonite, they rented me a 10 inch, 5 ton, 3 arms gear puller. I tried it but the pulley seems to be bending????? I'm afraid to go any further. Ideas, suggestions? Got the pulley soakin in PB blaster in the interim.
ESU
They rented you the wrong puller!!! You will most definatly bend the pull if you use that. The proper tool has 5 parts (one threaded rod with a centering point, two c-shaped halves, and a round coller that goes around the two c- shaped pieces, and a threaded pusher that srcews onto the rod. Try this link http://www.stu-offroad.com/steering/...pspulley-1.htm

DR. Jay
Dr Jay, checked out the link,he got the right puller at auto zone so I'll go back there tomorrow now that I know what it looks like,
Thx, ESU
No problem ESU. Glad too help. I would send you my puller, but that would take too long. Did you get the complete pump with reservoir or do you have to reuse your old reservoir? If you reuse your old reservoir be sure you use the correct o-rings that come in the kit. Also be sure that when you remove the large fitting that the pressure line screws into you note the position of the relief valve, and spring (if you install it backwords you won't have any powersteering pressure or it will lock the pump, and snap the pully shaft .)
OK, plan B. I think I bent the pulley trying it with the wrong puller. Going to go back to auto zone to see if he has the correct tool and take it off anyway. Maybe a little Bubba pounding with Lars' hammer might work. If not any idea where I can get a pulley. Do the aftermarket places carry them?
Dr J, bought the pump with reservoir.

Plan B definitely in effect. Pulley didnt look that bad on a flat surface. However once installed and spun around you could see it wobble. Auto zone did have the correct kit which even comes with a pulley installer. I hate it when a 2 hr 80 dollar job becomes a 5 hr $120 job.
Now just trying to rememeber who has the quickest shipping, Midamerica, Riks or corvette central or corvette america. Would like to get it back together for this coming holiday weekend.
i'm in the same boat..... my p/s pulley won't come of so i was thinking about just getting a new setup anywyas....... i know i'll ef it up... i tried a puller too and sumbeatch didn't want to budge......

I had to apply a little elbow grease but once it "cracked" it finally started to come off, took some persuasion.
Luv the color of your vette, what is it? Also like the bring a vest comment lol.
ESU
the color now is a seafoam green (different than avatar) but once i figure out what the hell i'm doing with work, i'm gonna strip it down and go the the elkhart green........ i like the darker green better......
i might just buy a p/s pump cause i soaked it with liquid wrench p-oil and still won't budge.......wtf........

I used a 3 arm pulley to try and take mine off. I wasn't paying close attention. Bent the pulley and then cut it off with the dremel. It cost me $40 for a new pulley. Since I screwed up mine, I know how not take it off. The pulley has a small groove on it where it goes around the pump shaft. There must be a tool the clamps around it to press it off; something like bearing clamp for the rear outer wheel bearing. If the pulley is bent, you might as well toss it.
Edit: Seen that somone posted what the correct tool is.

The cheapest , and easiest way to geta new pully is to take your power steering pully puller to a local auto parts recycler and pull a used one off a late '70s early '80s full size Chevy car or truck they are all the same. Some new flat black paint and you are all set.
Your local chevy dealer/parts counter can usually get them in by the next day.
I just got a new crank pulley from them. No more expensive than any of the catalogs when you figure in S&H plus time spent waiting.
Ordered one yesterday from Riks corvette parts, will try the local parts places today to see if I can find one, just want it up and running by the weekend.
