Always something!!! Pulley alignment all scewed up!
Have any of you had to shim pulleys? If so what did you use? My Water pump pulley is way off amd needs to be shimed out. I tried shiming the bolts but that made it wobble. Now I am thinking I need a single shim that I can fit between the pump flat and pulley. I am so close to cranking this thing and It is little stuff that is screwing me up....
The farther out you shim it the more force the belts will exert on the pump shaft and bearings. It would be better to move everything else into alignment.

Thanks guys! I will pst some pics in a little while to see if you guys catch something I am missing. Did all of you buy shim kits or did you come up with something home made to shim stuff out. I agree with ya'll on the water pump pulley. It looks like I am going to have to adjust out the others. Everytime I tried to adjust the water pump pulley I started to get a wobble.

i just made some spacers, about 3/4" so i couldn't use shims. ya gotta do what ya gotta do
Thanks guys. What it looks like is that my tall valve covers are being more of a problem than I thought they would be. I have all of the stock alternator brackets and I thought Iwas going to be able to use some half inch shims to pull the alternator away from the VC. This throws the alignment way off to where I would completely miss the water pump pulley. I am thinking I am going to have to go with an aftermarket bracket setup. Anbody successfully set up the accesories with Tall BB valve covers?
I had a similar problem. I had tall VCs on my SB and had nothing but problems. Turns out I had an assortment of pullys and brackets, and the tall VCs were not needed ".539 Ex". Once they got all vette pullys and brackets, everything fit perfectly. You might try 2 VC gaskets and see if you still need tall VCs. JMHO
Wouldn't it be easier to install a new AC Delco water pump?
The AC Delco pump is made to original specs and alignment should not be a problem.
Thanks for the suggestion. The water pump is a new Edelbrock Victor JR. After further examination it is not the pump that is the problem. I think I am getting closer to solving the problem using some stainless steel washers to shim the alternator out away from the VC's. I am glad not that I went with 2 groove pulleys on all the accessories and 3 grooves on the crank. This may be my saving grace for adjusting things out.
It may sound silly but; are you sure that you are trying to install the right belts to the correct pulleys?
At first, I made that mistake when I was putting everything back together on my 69 after replacing my water pump. At first I thought the alignment was way of, until I looked at it long enough to figure out that I had not put the belts on in the proper sequence. Once I got it right, everything was fine.
Actually your scenario is pretty close to what I am finding out. At first I thought that the pulley's were off farther than what they are and I went really aggresive with 1/2" spacers. After looking at it more closely and making smaller spacing changes at a time i think I am getting closer to getting things where they need to be. Again i think my biggest problem is the tall VC's and having to move the alternator out for clearence. The VC's are Billet Specialty peices so putting clearence dents in them is not an option. the second issue that is causing all my headaches is the fact that this was a sb to bb conversion so I am peicing things together from an AIM and other schematic sources. The best thing that I can say at this point is that I am closer to it being right now than I was 2 days ago.

Wade is your Damper installed to far out? I have a four hole aluminum disk in my tool box. It must be coming up on an 1/8th inch thick. It's made to fit on the water pump snout. Do you need it?

Hmm, I just went through this myself. Kept throwing belts. I just took the pump to a machine shop and had them press it .25" farther onto the shaft.
In your case, you could just pull it out as needed with a puller.
I took the pump back to the parts place and had them pull all of their pumps. we lined them up and you wouldn't believe the differences in how far in or out the mounting flange is pressed on to the shaft. there was over a 1/2" variance between the four that we looked at!

Thanks for the offer gkull. I have not looked at the balancer but will do so tonight and let you know.
