I'm in the throw of rebuilding the Muncie from my 71 LS5. I removed the front snap ring and can not get the front gear off. I did one of these years ago and don't remember having this problem. I even rigged up a fixture for my press, but it wouldn't budge. I really didn't use the full force of the press since I didn't think my fixture would stand up to it.
Im note a muncie expert, but I do have the factory overhaul manual. in the first paragraph that pertains to braking down the main shaft after removal from the case it reads. "Remove mainshaft front snap ring and slide third and fourth speed clutch assembly, third speed gear and sychronizing ring from front of mainshaft". Not sure if thats any help, unfortunatly there are no pictures of this aspect of disassembly. Sounds like it all comes off in an assemby from the third speed gear forward. Good luck
I've noticed this only in 26/32 spline transmissions such as yours.
The 1-2 and 3-4 hubs are press fit. This is because later hubs are nitrated. Giving them a hard surfacing which caused the tighter fit. You will notice your hub has more of a grayish color to it.
Use support plates under 3rd and press 3rd and the 3-4 hub off, remove the snap ring behind the rear bearing and press everything off supporting under 2nd, and the mainshaft is apart!
