Default 76 Katrina restoration - Gauges

I have just started restoring my 76 after it was completed submerged after Katrina. My question is where can I get new gauges (small) for the instrument bezel. Does anyone know if there any repro gauges available? How do I test the old ones?

If you can afford it, Eckler's has new replacement gauges for your C3. Or you can post a WTB (wanted to buy) here on the CF - which is really your best bet IMO. I have had the best online purchase experiences right here with our CF members.

Testing the various gauges will require different procedures....
I suggest that you post a different thread for each gauge asking for troubleshooting procedures.

As an afterthought - you can always try the "Smoke" test.

Put in a fresh battery, turn the key and see what happens. If there is smoke - you found the problem(s)!

Well I suppose it depends on your Electronic Tech experiences...
and if you can be careful enough to tear crap apart and put it back together after repairs, or not...

then again the faceplates are not worth restoring, just replacing, but another junkyard set is your best bet cost/time wise...

the guages pretty much all work the same way, basically they are a voltmeter connected to a variable resistance sensor. that being said make sure you have 12v to the guages in there now and put a low resistance ground to the other side, ~90 ohms, see what ya get. If they do something, hook them up normal and give them a try. Most likely failure mode will be water/crap in the guage. if its not corroded, it should work. Pre check them with an ohm meter for continuity, should be a fairly high resistance, but not open.

Out of curiosity can you post pics of what Katrina did to your car?
Did the insurance company total it and give you a salvage title?
Good luck on the restoration!

You are not alone. Katrina got mine too. Kind of sucks cause I had just finished the paint about 6 months before. I'm now going to pull the body off the frame, dip it and rebuild again. First I need to do the House, but I'm sure you know about that also.

Same boat. Going through the process of undoing everything Katrina did. Much harder to undo than it was to do. Check your fusebox. Mine has rusted, and now nothing electrical works. Looks like a new dash harness but I was thinking of trying to clean the contacts and replace the fuses. Just pulled the motor and transmission and found less damage than originally thought. Good Luck to you.

same here i just dumped the water out of my 76 today and turn the motor over by hand. i did not expect that to be possible. but it is going to be an interesting restore.

did the rest of you have insurance? that would suck without insurance.
crf311 has the right idea about dipping the frame. what are you going to do about the birdcage? good luck and lets pray for a inactive hurricane season this year.

I used 8 gallons of degreaser and a hose to clean up as much as possible. all the interior was shot to begin with. no insurance but i picked up the car for 2 grand. the engine ran but the car needed a complete overhaul. from body work to brake lines. great learning experience though.
