Either they're both correct, being that the motor is different temps in different locations, or...they're both wrong in that they are not calibrated together. I have three water temp gauges and they're all somewhat close, but not exact.
So are they two identical gauges? Do not rely (completely) on the factory gauge. I'm using a manual-sender in the passenger side head, an electric in the driver's side head and a manual dial-type gauge in the water pump.
When I was having problems with my stock (electrical) gauge, I installed (temporarily) a manual gauge under the hood in the opposite head (pass.). The stock gauge said 220 and the manual gauge said 185. Try installing a manual gauge and see what happens.
I'm pretty sure the sender on the passenger side of the block has something to do with a throttle control solonoid on the carb...more emmissions stuff. I only know about it because I found the connector for it smoking on the exhaust manifold. I'd have no problem believing that the block is different temps at different places though.

the difference is that early small blocks ( up to 68) had the sensor in the intake then later GM moved it to the heads (driver side, pass was for later options) because it would give a more accurate reading of coolant temp in the engine. I would say they are both reading acurately, but the heads are more revelent to overall engine temp as indicated by GM
what this practically menat is that you got an engine with larter heads and an earlier intake .
the motor is an olds 455... i ran the car today and it seems to be running goood.... the temps were all below 200....but when i carry the car on the highway the front goes up to 219 and the rear goes to 197.... can the type of wire that i use cause inaccurate readings??? what wire is best and would the length of the wire change the readings??
