GM parts book shows 74 thru early 78 all the same. Late 78s had
same type as 79 and up with a screw through the cyl. to keep
car thieves from "popping" the cyl. out but I am pretty sure this will
fit earlier cars but You just cant use the screw in it.
do you have to take the steering collar apart to get the cylinder out?? I had to drill mine to unlock the steering to tow it, no key, now I can't figure out how to get it out to replace it.
check out http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?page_id=4 for pics and exploded steering coulmn diagrams. If memory serves me correct, you have to pull out the turn signal switch to access a little button. This button releases the cylinder.
awesome Jeckel, got the thing out although I broke the plastic piece that sits in front of the spring over the contacts, no biggy, can I put the colum back together before putting the new cylinder in? In other words, does the cylinder just pop right in and lock?
Yup, it should just pop right back in and lock. I would wait to put the coulmn back together and put the lock in first. Just in case there is a problem, cause you never know what will happen next with working on an old car
As far as the plastic piece goes, if you are talking about the horn contact retainer it is only a few bucks to replace. If you are talking about the the horn contact I think that is still under 10 bucks. The hub is the like 50 bucks. Not realy sure which broke on you. But I remember my horn button retainer broke on me from being old.
