There may (repeat may) be some benefit for the tornado helping to better atomize the fuel but certainly it is negligable...certainly no measurable return on the $57 investment. Basically it is
It is nothing but a cat food can with the bottom cut out in a fan shape. Your buddy's been sniffing too many deisel fumes...but if it makes him feel better, don't burst his bubble.

A local Tech school did testing on these things in the last year and came up with zero differance,, and like an article I read, if they did make any kind of positive difference would you not think the auto makers would have installed them,,, at $1,14Lt for gas economy is big bussiness.
If it sells for $57 retail, GM or Ford could make it for $6. Don't you think if it improved milage by 1/2% they would use it. Many people who do buy these kind of things either don't know the difference or are too embarrased to admit it. Buy a tank of gas instead and have some fun.
Here's what I never got about the Tornado claims. K&N filters tells you that one of the advantages of using their filter is that it straightens out the air flow into the carb for better venturi and vacuum signal response. Result is better power and gas mileage ( if you keep your foot out of it ). So how can doing the exact opposite thing possibly give you the same result???
One of my friends installed a Tornado on his '80 GMC dually , saw absolutely no difference from his usual 9 mpg with a 454. Returned it , told them it was just hokey cr@p , and spent the money on beer instead.
I installed a 4 hole swirl-torque spacer under the Q-Jet in my 72 Chev C20 with 700R4 and 350 roller motor, and got 20 mpg on a long trip. Low end torque still very good , upper range power still strong , and the mpg improvement was about 2 mpg. Of course , air cleaner to hood clearance is not an issue in that vehicle. ( I installed that spacer because that concept and configuration made more sense to me. )
I had installed a 4" K&N with an x-stream lid at the same time as the spacer , so I can't verify how much improvement is attributable to either component separately. ( Threw the old paper filter away, and not curious enough to get another one to find out. )
I put one in the vette and got a 345 hp increase with 390 ft/lbs of torque. On the dyno! Then I woke up, shaved, brushed my teeth, got dressed and went to work.
I beg to differ! They work great! The guys who make them are making lots of money from them!
Oh, did you mean will they help your car? Of course not. Although you may notice a slight improvement in milage and performance due to the fact your wallet is now lighter...
