Default Heater Controler Mounting

Here's a question that's off the beaten path.....How does my heater/AC controller on my 69 mount to the center console? I see two holes on the controller (at the top and the left/center) that line up with two holes on the center console, but how does it attach? Are there nut plates or something that are missing there that need to be put on????

Also, when I look up under the center console, up by the fiber optic display for the front lights, there are two bolts sticking down that have nothing attached to them. Is this part of the mystery????

Thanks, I won't be surprised if no one has the answer. This is a little detail, but it's driving me nuts.

On my 74, the climate control mounts (with 2 small screws) to a thin metal support that fits down into the console, then the shift plate sits on top of it. Very hard to describe, wish I had a photo...

We got our answers out of the assembly instruction manual. Order one for your '69. The two bolts you see run from the bottom of the center cluster, through the console, and attach beneath the console reinforcement. Lots of folks don't put the nuts back on after taking the cluster out of the dash, so they may, or may not, be there.

Your questions have been answered. The heater/AC controller get attached to metal bracket with the two screw holes, then this braket rest on the tabs on top of the center console. There should be nuts on the bolts fastening the center gauge bezel to the console. They are not the easiest item to get off and a pain to get back on.

Default Facing down

OK. I found the metal bracket that the AC control mounts to and I'm good to go there. It's rusty, but I think it will work.

Now, as far as the bolts on the center console goes, I'm still a little bit confused. The bolts screw into the console vertically and face down towards the transmission tunnel, not forward. The are right in line with the fiber optic display, on the underside of the console that the AC, ashtray and shifter stick up through, but the face downward as if something bolts up to the console or something???

I really appreciate you guys' help. I know this is a nit, but I want this restored back to original and I can't figure that one out.

Thanks again.

You can get assembly manuals from most of the mail order parts companies or from ebay...

The bolts you speak of are not bolts as we commonly think of. The center gauge bezel have these as part of the casting. I have a 76 so things are a little differnent, no fiber optics. The center shifter console has a metal 'U' bracket in the front for support. This 'U' bracket has 2 slots for the 'bolts' to go through. Since I do not have the fiber optics, I do not have any idea as to how that stuff was mounted. By installing the nuts, the center shifter console and the center gauge bezel are tied together. Things should not only fit better that way, but should make for a stronger connection since it is being supported in different areas. An assembly manual is very helpful in times like this

Edit:
I just finished putting my stuff back together last week. I know it can be a pain to get everything back the way it was. If things such as this were not needed, GM would not have spent the time and money to do it. If you're going to do it, might as well do it the right way. This area is not something that needs to be taken apart every couple of years. The last time I had my console and gauges out was over 20 years ago.

Default Thanks

OK. I guess I gotta get an assembly manual and dig around in the parts basket for the bracket. Thank you for the help and I agree.....if it wasn't a good idea, GM probably wouldn't have spent the money to put it there. I'll put 'er back the way she was when she was borne!!!

Thanks for the help.

Pick you favorite Corvette aftermarket provider (ZIP, Eckler's, Corvette Central, Mid-America, etc) and order one. All of them carry assembly manuals. My three ('68, '74, and '80 and my fiancee's '71 AIM) all came from ZIP Products but only because we like ZIP.

Order a reproduction owner's manual if one did not come with your '69.

It has occurred to me what you are calling "bolts" under the console might be the pins for the fiber optic bezel. Both (the bolts and the pins) are under there.
