The alt bracket on my 72 LT-1 makes it impossible to remove my P/S pump cap. Changing the P/S belt won't help. I do not know how to post pics, so I cannot show the prob. Any ideas?

I have similar problems with my 72 LT1 but I found that by an excessive amount of wiggling, pulling the cap, twisting, and cursing that I can USUALLY get the cap off. Try different angles of the cap as you move it around. It took me forever to figure out that I could remove it. In the meantime, I stuck a long, thin screwdriver down into the reservoir and was happy when I saw PS fluid.

Ron,
Why did you say changing the belt is not an option? Is there something different/custom about your car? If not, the problem is definitely caused by the wrong belt length. Replace it with a longer or shorter belt as needed and the dipstick will come out easy as can be.
Greg
Lil longer belt than what ya have will work, That fluid checker ya got there is funny as hell, LOL. Good lookin car tho.
If the PSP is growling, add a little juice.

The reason I thought channging the belt was not an option was because it looked like only a much shorter belt would help clear the alt bracket. I will try a longer belt. Good to know this is not a unique problem. Thanks guys!
I had the same trouble with my 76. The neck was to long on the pump so I had to order one that was the correct pump. I guess you could cut the stick if you had to.
On my 69 BB, which probably has different brackets, here is the story. After rebuilding the engine I found I had the same problem. It turns out that part of bracket can be installed 2 different ways. The bracket looks symetrical at first glance, but 1 end is actually a little longer. Flopped the bracket over and I quit cursing the "stupid" Gm engineer who designed a ps pump that couldn't be checked.
Cool,
On my '74, I loosen the PSP mounting bolts, swing the pump towards the crank, remove lid, check level and adjust if necessary, replace lid, swing PSP away from crank until belt is tight and tighten PSP mounting bolts. I know it's a bit messy, but it works and you quckly get the hang of it. Just part of the regular maintenance on a C3.
