Default Need some advice re: new engine and trans

i am considering putting a crate engine into my 72, as well as a 5 or 6 sp. tranny. Right now I have the 350 base engine and a 4 sp. but would like to be able to take her on long trips and feel confident. The car is mostly original so I will keep the motor and trans. but as I said I would like to update the motor and trans, and put in air ( for my wife). Also any suggestions as to a replacement radiator would be appreciated as well. I just love this car, been driving her for 2 years now and will be doing a body off this next year.

72 mille miglia, convert.
350 base, 4 sp

I used a ZZ4, Centerforce clutch and new Richmond ST-10. I thought about a 5 speed, but decided that in my case just replacing the tranny with a new one was the way to go. The setup is a couple of years old now and I'm still happy with it. I don't make a lot of long trips, but have made a couple of 250 mile round trips and it held up well and was fun on the highway.

As for the radiator, I just replaced mine with a reproduction stock radiator. The old one was cooling o.k. when I could keep water in it. It just got to leaking like a sieve. The new one cools fine.

Another option is a Ramjet 350 (350 hp, 400 ftlb, fuel injected for ~$4500) plus a Tremec 5 spd (~$1700 http://www.fortesparts.com). The Tremec has a 3.27 first and a .68 OD. Just means I'll have to cruise at 80+ to get about 2500rpm in 5th.

I am leaning this way myself with a slightly softer than stock suspension. VB 460# springs vice my 550# ones. Should make a greta cruiser.

BTW, this is an open loop set for the FI but there are kits to make it closed loop for fuel economy. Figure an additional 5 mpg.
