Default 4 bolt main?

I have a 78 vette with a 350. Did they come stock with a 4 bolt main?

The L48 was a 2 bolt. If you are thinking of rebuilding, the 2-bolt will be just fine unless you want to spin 8000 with 700 HP.

You cannot go by the L48 being the 2 bolt all the time. I have a 80 that is a L48 with correct numbers block for the car and it has 4 bolt mains. You will never know unless you drop the oil pan. Brent

Rumor mill has it they built with 4-bolts if they din't have the 2-bolts available and vise/versa.

A member from this forum said that he used to work on the line when these cars were being built. If they ran out of 2 bolt blocks they would grab a 4 bolt main motor to keep the line moving along. Brent

Correct. The 4-bolt main in a lower HP production would certainly have been a FLUKE, not the norm. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

I do not think the used 2 bolt if it called for a 4 bolt, GM will upgrade when needed but not downgrade
