Backfiring through carb
My 72 LT-1 is backfiring through the carb when I start it. It does it almost every time I start it, cold or hot. The carb is the stock Holley and has been gone through by a mechanic. The jets are 68's and 74's. The timing and dwell are correct and carb seems to be adjusted right. It runs well and has plenty of power. Any ideas?

Backfiring thru the carb is usually an indication of one of two things: either the carb is adjusted too lean or the timing is off.
try setting the mixture a bit richer on the carb. if that doesn't solve the problem than check your timing again.

I had a similar issue and found that the timing mark was incorrect-- someone had replaced the harmonic balancer at one point. So you could physically find top dead center and verify your timing mark.
