I have to replace the hood surround and right rear fender on my 69. Local paint supply only handles Evercoat products. They don't have anything for the old fiberglass only SMC. What brand and where to buy the bond adhesive I need? I know Ecklers has there own brand, but I was thinking I might find something better.
What works on SMC works on all fiberglass. There are two types of bonding adheshive. The bondo type and the epoxy type. Ecklers carries a two part adhesive for SMC that is the strongest I have seen. It is a little harder to work with and takes 24 hours to cure. It is manufactured by Lord and is the epoxy type of adhesive.
I have some info on this. My bro in law just did a lot of fiberglass work on his C2 which included bonding a whole nose on the car. His uncle has been doing body work for years, did my car also. He was using a product but they recently tried a product called Pro Set. He liked it much better and had a better working time and it bonded better than the old stuff. It is a 2 part epoxy that is mixed as it comes out and it comes out like toothpaste. Google Pro Set and you will find it. Used a lot for boats so for our cars it should work good. Not real cheap but it worked very well for him. They were both impressed with the working and bonding of it. My inner fender has come apart from the outer fender and I'm going to use this stuff.
Lord Fusor 147 (sounds like a superhero, doesn't it?). So far great stuff, as I reassemble my front end. I bought a special caulking gun, and mixing tips.
Otherwise, if you want stock appearing stuff, Corvette Image sells it $70/gal.
Used by aftermarket folks to bond the header bar to the underside of hood surrounds and 1-piece front ends. In my opinion, this is the most structurally-demanding bond on the 'vette.
As a material scientist, I disagree with assuming that something that works for SMC will work equally well with press-molded resin/mat fiberglass -- there are differences.
I just used the bondo-glass to put the front clip on my 75`. I figured it was as good as any other polyester resin adhesive. If it goes flying off, I guess I'll know why.
