Default 81 vette, doesn't crank

i put a new intake and dist' on but nothing is hooked up yet, but i think the motor should still crank ( turn over). i was trying to get piston #1 to the top, i had to turn it by hand.

should i be able to only turn the crank with a rachet or by hand?
all the belts are still on the other pulleys

It "can" still crank providing the batt. is hooked up is in park or clutch is depressed.Careful with the alt. wiring if it is not hooked up.Did you disconnect the starter harness pass side by AC box?Probably safer to do by hand!

yes it should crank. Battery is good, in park, electrics good.
Put a test light on the S wire on the starter and hit the key, that will tell the story

OK I just looked at my wiring diagram and you could be right if the computer controles the starter interupt relay but it shows it is part of the theft system.

Please clarify: Was the computer already removed from this engine? Have you gone back to mechanical control over the carburator? I assume you know that the distributor would have to be changed out as well as the carb.

I agree with Cooper and Sixfooter probe that purple wire at term. S --If you feel like ripping out the "starter interupt relay" and connecting the purple wires that feed term. S then it is located in the console behind the trim bracket.
