Last week I dropped the transmisson pan in the '82 to beat out a dent and replaced the filter. All went well. Now, the tranny shifts like a drag car. Goes almost to red line and then slams into gear....2nd then 3rd...won't ever make it to overdrive. Someone last week said to adjust the TV cable. Why would it need adjusted if all I did was drop the pan? Where and what do you adjust? Is there an adjustment that can be done under the car? I thought that the only place to adjust it was up by the throttle bodies and I didn't mess with anything up there. I need to get this fixed before I blow something up! :(
If all you did was remove pan, replace gasket and filter, then add fluid, then you're right, should be no need to re-adjust the TV cable. I wonder if you didn't accidently unhook one of the electrical connectors in the transmission in the process. I believe you have the ecm controled shift, TH350, like I have in your '82, if I'm not mistaken. Sorry, but I don't have anyother idea as to why you are now experiencing these symptoms. Can anyone else out there help???
Thanks for you comments John, but '82 was the first year for the 700r4, I believe. What kind of wire would I look for? It's pretty hard for a 50 year old fat man to get under that car much less see what I'm doing! :yesnod:
The tranny seems to slowing be healing it's self. It shifts through the gears fine now except for OD. It won't go into OD. Could a stuck valve cause this slowly repairing it's self problem. I know this sounds crazy but an oldtimer told me to go up to about 30MPH and slowly ease the shifter into "Reverse" (not all the way) but just a little. He said that will reverse the flow in the tranny and dislodge anything that might be stopping the valve. Anyone ever hear of this before. It might be something I'd do on someone else's car but not mine.
Sorry about that, now I know you do not have a TH350. I could see at least two electrical connectors inside my transmission, once I had the pan removed, in fact one was disconnected when I removed the pan to change the fluid right after I bought the vette. I hooked the disconnected wire back up, and transmission works fine(except for a noticeable 'wine' after it is warmed up, and placed in reverse, or if I 'lock' shifter in either 1st or 2nd gear, but that's another storey which does not yet have an ending, since I've not yet done work on the transmission, other than changing the fluid and connecting the wiring harness I described), I believe the disconnected wire harness was for the lock up torque convertor. I have heard that some owners disconnected this feature to improve performance, I guess at the expense of fuel economy.
I really can't help you on the 700R, but I'm sure someone on the forum can. Never heard the old timer one about partial shifting in reverse, but agree that I don't believe I'd try it on my car. How dirty was the fluid when you drained and changed??? I assume you were careful to clean pan and surface of all old gasket material, and none of that could have been left in the pan when you re-installed. Does the filter on a 700R have an O-Ring or gasket between filter and transmission? Assume you got this right and tight.
I really don't know why transmission would be 'fixing' itself, other than as you suggested, just never heard of such a situation before. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
I really like the way it's running right now. It's sure not running like a mis-fire, I mean crossfire! I may give it one more day to heal itself!
I once had a Camaro that had a similar problem after I changed the filter/fluid. Same tranny...700R4
I was told to warm it up at idle then shift thru all the gears with your foot on the brake. Start at low wait a couple of seconds then shift up...same procedure thru reverse. After doing that a couple of times all went back to normal. Make sure you also check the fluid level.
