I decided a few months ago to go out and buy a nice 73-Vette. At the time I was budgeting in the $10k to$12k range. I do not care abought numbers matching and most of the vettes I did see were not numbers matching even though the owners claimed that they were. It appears that most dudes are watching Barrette Jackson these days. Oh well I guess I will just keep on looking.
Look here. Be patient. Plenty of nice cars at a good price. Most of the sellers have been forum members forever. Probably the most honest bunch you will ever meet.

Try dealsonwheels.com they have a huge selection 4 all budgets.......
From: Arlington Va Current ride 04 vert, previous vettes: 69 vert, 77 resto mod
you should be lucky with that kind of change...a couple of months there was one that needed a motor around here for $8k.....if i didn't have the vette and the hotrod i would have purchased it.
Yeah, barrett jackson is ruining the old car hobby for the common man. Rich guys paying extremely high prices just for bragging rights drives the price up on all old cars. It doesn't make resto parts any cheaper, either.

This is a double edged sword. I have over 20K in my car and it's not even done yet. I even got a great deal on the body/paint work and frame redo (7K). I also have brand new VBP max performance suspension, Steeroid kit, brakes, fuel lines and tank, radiator/condensor, and AC setup, as well as lots of other parts I lost track of paying for.
You can definitely get a decent running car for low teens $$$, but at the same time you cant restore one of these for less than 20K either, well unless you do the bodywork/paint as well.
Barrett Jackson is driving up the price of low milage documented original cars which helps the value of drivers/clones/non-original cars go up as well, is that a bad thing, especially when the cost of finishing them is going up as well?

You have made good points. I am willing to open my wallet a bit wider. I want to be fair to the all the vette sellers. I am just looking for a nice driver and I am willing to sink a few $$$$$ to keep it nice.
It's not just B-J that's driving up the prices of these old cars. I bought my '70 C3 in 1997 for $8500; at that time my SoCal house was worth about $140,000. I sold that house in 2003 for $320,000. Gas that came from $10/barrel oil and cost $1.10 in 1997 now comes from $75/barrel oil and costs $3.25. That $8500 Vette has now had a complete suspension rebuild, been repainted, all-new brakes, fresh motor, four-speed conversion, etc., etc. and is now worth maybe $20,000. Monetary inflation is the problem, not Barrett-Jackson. Auction prices are merely a reflection of the kind of money that's actually out there and available, and society's yearning for a return to the good ol' 60's. I remember (and profited greatly from) the Cold War, it was a picnic compared to the looming Islamic Menace that we're facing now....
There are a lot of good drivers out there for under 20 grand. Look at mine for instance. And remember the price in those expensive ads is only the starting point - the buyer has to agree with the seller on the value. Joe

It's definitely more affordable to find a good driver than to redo a car yourself. The main ingredient is patience. If you can hold out you'll find what you're looking for...
