Default Engine code numbers for 81 - HELP

Can some tell where the easiest place is to locate the engine code number on my car, so I can determine which engine I have in my 1981 vette. Thanks

All '81s had same engine, which was designated by chevrolet as an L-81. Believe you can find #s on RH(passenger side) head front side, near where it meets block/head gasket. Believe engine block code is rear by oil filter or oil pressure sending unit, but not absolutely certain on this one. Maybe the "Mortec" site on internet can help you on # locations.

If the engine is original, you will find two numbers stamped on a pad (part of the engine block) at the front of the right (passenger's side) head in the area of the water pump. AC compressors and AIR pumps can get in the way of seeing it readily, but the pad is there and will be stamped with the engine production date (which include your engine code) and the plant stamp which will include part of the VIN of your car. 1981 Corvette California emissions engines are coded ZDB or ZDC depending upon the transmission used. All others are coded ZDA or ZDD.

Thank you both for the information, it is appreciated. I thought what I needed was in the area you describe, but it is difficult to see with the pump, and compressor in the way. I will find it, even if I have loosen and move things. I know 81's only had the one engine, but a fellow I know was trying to tell me that the L82 was an option. I know it wasn't, I think it was in 1980 and I found the code for that engine, which was ZBC. Thanks for the help. dmac
