Default To All HARDCORE enthusiasts

I need help identifying a couple issues before my new 800hp powerplant gets dropped in the vette. The steering sucks. My powersteering went out on me so i now it feels soooo sloppy and feels all over the road. Im wondering what would be the way to go. I wanted info on a manual kit and I have heard talk of steeroids. What is the best. I want percise feedback as it may save my life someday. LOL I have 17 inch rims 550 lb coils, 360 lb fiberglass leaf spring. HELP w/ steering. It gets a little scary almost like it has a mind of its own. It also probably needs alignment.

Loss of power assist won't cause slop. It just increases effort.

You have other issues that need sorted out before you try to haul *** with 800hp.

Speeddirect.com (steeroids rack and pinion) and Corvettesteering.com (jeep recirc. ball) have non-factory solutions and a couple guys have done home-brew rack and pinion setups.

That said, I don't have any slop or concerns with my factory PS steering.

Make extra sure you have inspected the bushings, bearings, and alignment.

if noone has anything bad to say about steeroids by midnight tonight im gonna order the steeroids kit. The only other issue is if i go manual or power assist. if i go manual the procharger install would be easier thats for sure because i would have nothing for the bracket to hit on anymore in the engine bay area. But i can always take some metal out of the bracket too. so it will fit.

Everytime i hit a bump or anything its like the tires turn themselves im fighting it going left and right on me. it kinda sucks. the engine is getting pulled this weekend to make room for all polyeurthane engine and tranny mounts. How can you tell if you ball joints are okay up there with out taking the springs out or is that not possible

with CGGorman

and check the rag joint. They're a pretty common failure and they'll make your car wander like a drunken sailor.

I'll post a pic if you like. It's a rubber/fabric coupler that joins the steering column to the steering box.

oh yeah and just to note my steering now leaks like a siv. all fluid cam out in a day and was out at the popular cruise on the weekend and found myself having to cut off the power steering belt to stop it from whinning. Needless to say it was embarassing so ive been stuck manual ever since.

Have someone wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while you watch this joint. If it wiggles, replace it. Available at NAPA or any parts store. Should be less than $10.
Best,
Greg

all the bushings in the rear are new but not in the front. No this may seem like a dumb question but how do you check your bearings. jack the car up and spin the wheel?

How about your upper and lower control arm bushings? If they're out you can get the same "drunken sailor" feel.

I have a Steeroids R&P installed. Made a huge difference to the slop!!

I had to modify the Vortech S/C bracket a little, but it fits in quite nicely with the Steeroids kit.

hmmm The jeep one you have to modify the firewall. Doesn't look like fun. but is half the cost of the steeroids. both have there pros and cons. Does one out perform the other???

Well, do you want to tell people that you have a Dodge steering your Vette in the right direction?
