Default 1980 Heater controls

Guys, I have a question about the heater controls in my 1980.
Basically how does the cold-heat slider work?

Right now when I slide from cold to heat, it opens the flap to the heater core, and opens the controller that applies vacuum to the heater valve under the hood. IS this correct? Because when the heater valve gets vacuum it opens it...

Thanks
Mike

That would be correct, the valve opens letting hot water flow
through the heater core. You might want to consider putting a
manual cutoff valve in the heater hose along with the vac. controlled
valve which are nortorious for not closing off,and letting hot water
flow through heater core when in AC mode.

Update... I was incorrect when I described the heater controller.

On mine, its only when I push the white button controller under the dash do I get hot air.
Cold air when its at the cold side...
A little bit warmer air when I slide it to the heat side...
and Hot air when I manual push the controller in and have it sild to heat.

So right now when its on cold I have heat running through the heater core but the flap is shut.
the hot water valve is new and works good. Vacuum opens the valve.

The controller under the dash has 3 nipples. right now I have the black hose on the one closest to the firewall and a black hose w/ white strip one over.
Is this correct?

OK, I have 79s and they may be different than Your 80. On mine
when cold-hot lever is all the way on cold the button on vac. valve
is depressed. On mine the vac. port closest to firewall is from vac.
source and other port goes to water valve.Cant go by hose colors
because 79s use diff. vac. hoses.

Your setup sounds like mine. The vacuum source is the hose closest to the firewall. The next one out is to the heater valve. But I have a third. I tried to change them around but it doesn't seem to work. When I press the buttom I get vacuum. I checked the assembly manual and thats how it says to set it up. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I think this is what You have already stated but anyway went out
and put vac. gauge on line going to heater valve. With the lever all
the way to the left on cold have vac. to valve, move lever about
I/4 way to right and no vac. to valve. so obviously vac. holds valve
shut,no vac. valve opens. I may not understand Your problem but I
do know this, even a brand new valve is junk and will leak.Thats why
so many people put a manual shut off valve in line.It makes AC work
SO much better.

Thanks, mine works the same as yours. Vacuum at the far left of the slider. But I'm sure that when I slide it to heat and apply vacuum to the valve it gets hotter. Me and a firend sat there looking at it for an hour trying to figure it out.

Looks like I'm going to have to go take another look.
