I just stripped out my '72 interior, re-dyed vinyl, restored gauges and I just put the dash back together. Maiden voyage was yesterday. Everything worked....kindof... The wiper door opens as soon as there is enough vacuum after starting, and stays open till you turn it off. The wiper switch has no effect; ie; the wipers don't turn on, and the door doesn't shut regardless of switch position.
The wiper switch is new, reproduction, and I suppose I could have attached the connector upside down (I don't think it was a keyed connector) but the old wire was bent in an obvious direction to how I reattached it.
Also had the wiper door solonoid off the back of the tach during the dash restoration. Before I tear it all apart... if the problem was with the wiper door solonoid the door would stay open, but the wipers should work when you turn on the switch, right? and if the switch was bad, why would it open the door and not turn on the wipers? It feels like i'm fighting two problems...but that wouldn't seem likely as they worked before I took it all apart? Any ideas???
Did you try messing with the wiper vacuum switch override switch underneath the drivers side dash pad? I know its a simple thing but sometimes it gets over looked.
i had those out, but those are headlight overrides, right? you mean the two Pull Down pieces with the **** in between directly under the steering column??
Thanks guys...!! I have not had the car that long, and made a silly assumption about those overrides...thought one was for each headlight
I had to cut off the old rusted switch (center ****)...is i know assume that **** is a normally closed switch and you turn it to break the circuit to stop the wipers in mid windshield... so if the switch is not in the circuit, that probably explains why my wipers are not working??

That is why your wiper motor is not working but it has nothing to do with the wiper door. It is either the overide switch or the vacuum solenoid behind the tach that is causing your wiper door to open when you start your engine. Good luck.
