Default Power Steering Priming ?

Did a bit of research on this and there seems to be a couple of ways of attaching this.

I replaced the pump and hoses and am getting the steering pulsating thing with wheels off ground so I assume a bleed is needed. I am curious how you guys have done this. One method seems to be to treat it like brakes. My question is where to bleed, at the valve or ram ?? any other methods to try ??

Thanks!

I would get the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering lock to lock a few times. Check the fluid level and make sure it is somewhere near midpoint. Don't fill it all the way while in the air, it may cause it to be over filled when on the ground. Then start the car and turn the car lock to lock. Cut the car off and let the fluid settle and recheck it again. Turn it lock to lock while off again and recheck levels. A few cycles of this should get you bled. If it foams the fluid, which it may have when you felt pulsating, you may have to let it set over night to get all the bubbles worked out.

Thanks, did as you wrote and have the foamy fluid thing going. As soon as I start her up and touch that wheel she jerks and then pulsates. I am going to let it sit overnight and try again tomorrow.

Tony,

Maybe it is air in the system and maybe it is not. Let's hope it is just air.

What type of fluid are you using? Some people have used transmission fluid but power steering fluid as some antifoaming additives in it. Jim Shea, the C3 steering expert, only recommends the GM product.

You probably have to adjust the valve as well if this is the case. If you try to put the wheels straight and they decide to turn left or right on their own, see the directions on corvettefaq.

Very easy to do.

When I did my steering rebuild last year I pushed the ram piston in and out slowly a few times before connecting it to the frame bracket to work the air out. Since you need to disconnect it to balance the valve anyway, this seemed like the easier way to go. Never had any steering pulsation or foaming afterwards, so I have to assume it worked.
