I don't know if anyone has a 2004R in a 79, but I have a 700R4 in my 78. VERY GOOD MOD. The 2004R is supposed to be better for some. http://www.700r4.com has everything you need to know, send them an email or call them.
Pretty painless conversion, as long as you have the time.

I did the 700r4 swap from BTO and was quite happy with their service. If I were staying with 3.08s or anything less than 3.70s I would definatly get a 700r4. If I knew I would be getting 4.11s (or 3.90s) I would opt for a 200-4r; if I knew strength was not an issue. The first gear in a 700r4 is FUN, but if you gear it too much it's bound to be useless. I'll find out tonight (driving the car with 4.11s for the first time)!
My tranny guy has a 700R4 is his blown Camaro with 5.57 gears. He said he just floors it and it shifts  4.11's and the 3.06 low gear is plenty, but just try and hook it up!
I've heard disappointing things about the 200R4 (unless it has been worked over) But the easiest (and most cost effective) method is a 700R4 swap. I picked up the tranny x-member adapter and TV adapter for my carb from Bowtie, the shifter conversion from Shiftwerks and a tranny from pick-n-pull. (I did a transgo overhaul the other day) Chop off 3 inches from your driveshaft and throw it all together. Assuming you have the th-350, the yoke will slide right into the 700R4 tailshaft. Good luck what ever you decided!
Robzr did you find out that first gear is only used for a second or two?
Yah, especially at part throttle! I noticed it shifts about 10 feet into an intersection with light throttle, or halfway through a turn from a stop (I can't wait to experience that one in the rain!). I still have to align my rear end (just bought some alignment tools), but with the smart struts and adjustable rear spring, I'm getting about the same amount of wheelspin as my 3.08s and a 9 leaf. I can't wait to align it and take it to the strip!
robzr 4.11 gears are very hard on posi units. The WOT 1-2 shift while turning on an on ramp has caused me to have a death rattle in the rear end a couple of times.
To the 200R4 poster any performance built 200 will work just fine and be a better overall geared tranny than the 700. They are a much better fit.
