I've determined that the AC condenser that came with my 71 is not the original design for a 71 Vette (i.e., it was cannibalized from another make or model) and that it is not matched to the Sanden 508 that is now installed.
I'm looking at installing a Supercool condenser from Vintage Air or Hot Rod Air for more cooling capacity.
Does anyone have experience with these Supercool condensers?
I've got a HRA unit, but it isn't up & running yet. The condenser is a little smaller than stock, but everyone I've talked to says these repalcement units will freeze your gonads off.
134 cools to 37 in San Antonio that's good did you have to install a aux.fan for when you are not moving air . Maybe I've just had a bad expirence with a 134 system
I'm doing the Sanden conversion as well. I got the compressor and bracket from Hot Rod Air. I've test fit the parts and they are perfect fit. I had converted my system to 134 a number of years ago but the rebuilt R4 finally gave up.
It looks like the easiest way to make new connections at the condenser is to pull the hood so I plan on doing that this week.
By the way what accumulator and orfice tube are you using?
vett79.Flynhi is using an accumulator that is aluminum. I do not know if it was original. we took it off from one location and mounted it at another location. It has a fitting at the bottom for the suction line and one fitting on the top side suction line. It also has 2 ports on the top sides where gauges could be installed.
On the orfice tube. It is a fitting tube where the orfice drops into. Go by your local A/C supplier and they can set you up with the right setup. The orfice is a different size than the R12. Some people just replace the oil, change the orings and evacuate the system and charge the system without changing the orfice.
Make sure you replace the drier.
Over here it is hot year round and when in traffic or at lights the AC shuts down. I have to turn off the AC in the city. Many have installed two fans in front of the Radiator to move air and keep the AC working. I have been holding out on this as the hood wont be able to open fully with the fans in front. I always wondered how these cars cooled from the factory?

I assume you are using 134a refrigerant.
I'm not familiar with the supercool, but what you want is called a "parallel flow" condenser of the largest size that you can cram in there. It probably is a parallel flow but they probably just call it their own name. Ask them.
134a needs this type to perform best.
With the car at around 1200 rpms, let a hose mist water over the condenser and see if your vent temps drop considerably. If so you can use either a better condenser and/or auxiliary a/c pusher fan.
You should be able to get mid 30s with a sanden proper condenser and pressures.
Noonie,
The description of the Supercool is a tank type (vertical tanks on either end) as opposed to a conventional back and forth tube type. They claim 30 to 40 % more cooling from the same size. Used by Vintage Air on most of their hot rod kits.
Misting the condenser is a good idea. I'll try it.
I'll be happy as a clam if I can get into the 30's.

By orefice tube are you talking about that finger like object with what looks like fine screen on it? If so there is a different one for 134 as opposed to r12? I converted my system to r134 a yr ago. I changed out that tube , had it evacuated and then refilled with 134, works pretty good but I guess it could be better. If the tube is different does anyone have the correct part number?
Thx, ESU
I recently did a conversion and used a "Variable orifice tube", got it from Autoz***. The part number is MT0629. It was on a '80 Vette, blows ice cubes in a 98 degree shop.

Local autozone doesnt have it, closest one is quite a distance away. By variable I assume there is an adjustment?? Does it come with instructions on how to do it?
