Default What NOW????

I regretfully let my father-in-law drive my (new to me) 69 427 Roadster.
The engine was blueprinted and balanced and bored over .30 about 6000 miles ago and runs fantastic. My Father-in -law got the freakin floor mat stuck on the gas pedal, towards the bottom. He tried to take off and when He hit third and released the clutch the engine redlined for about 10 seconds then he did it again about six or seven times. He was trying to blame it on a sticking carbureator. Finally on the last redline I said "just turn it off and pull over!!!!!"
Upon getting into my drivers seat I realized that it had just been the carpet stuck on the bottom of the pedal, so when he let his foot up, his heel was increasing gas. So the engine still sounds ok, but is there something I can do to make sure everything is O.K. What happens when the engine is redlined up to 7000 rpm. I turned her over about 5 hours later and she idled o.k. but I did notice some smelly rich exhaust, which I don't remember before.

 :mad :mad

If you didn't get any immediate results, like floating the valves or putting a rod thru the block, it's probably going to be o.k.

Sounds like the worst-case scenario didn’t happen, valve to piston contact due to valve float. It is possible that the timing chain jumped a tooth, but unlikely if it has low mileage. No telling what the bottom end went through. Just keep an ear out for knocking at startup. Try not to sweat it too much.

Thanks Mack,

What does floating the valves mean? I didn't punch a rod through or anything but the timing sounded a little funny when I initially turned it off after his redline ride.

Your right, I should have thrown him out the driver's seat. But I did marry his daughter. Yesterday was her Birthday and she may have been upset if I came home to tell her that I left her dad on the side of the road with the other road kill.

Thanks

Sounds and looks like you owe another 6pack  to your engine builder. He must have done a good job, cuz it is still all together and not spread on the road.  :D   :D

Basically the valves are going so fast that the valve springs can't pull the valve closed and the head of the valve could hit the piston. Then the bad things really start happening. :(

If you didn't have to go back down the road and pick up the pieces, I'd say you're probably okay.
