Default Power steering pumps ?

is there a difference between a small block pump and a BB ps pump? When I got the BB brackets they also sold me a ps pump and hose. Did I get Hooked?

There was only one power steering pump each year. The same pump was used on big blocks and small blocks. The pressure hose was different between big blocks and small blocks. It looks like you picked up an extra pump.

Go to Terry Rudy's websight: http://www.corvettefaq.com and look under Suspension and Steering. There is a text document Steering Hose Routing (all engines) as well as two pictures. The picture you want is Steering Hose Routing (Pic) Strg Hose Pump to Valve. There is a picture of the big block (LS4) hose with an angle describing how it should be attached to the pump.

Thanks. I'll change the pulley and put old pump back in. It works just fine.

I just noticed that you have a 1980 Corvette. That means that your pump has a 16mm female metric o-ring discharge port. Your small block power steering pressure hose has that same metric fitting with a 16mm male nut.

The big block pump (since it was 1968 to 74) has a 45 degree flare fitting with a 5/8-18 female port. The big block hose has a matching 45 degree flared end with a male 5/8 nut.

The key is that there is a special big block pressure hose. Since it has a 5/8 nut and flare fitting you will not be able to use your pump. Unless you unscrew the fitting from the back of the big block pump and swap it for the fitting in your pump!

Sorry, I should have caught this the first time.

Jim is absolutely right! I had this identical problem on the ZZ/502 swap into my '79. The solution is correct. :chevy :chevy

Ok guys. I'm going to use the new pump and the new hose. Thanks for the info. I checked the hose on the little box thingy ( other end from the pump )and it screws in so thank you. Then on to that stupid alternator to make it fit without hitting valve cover stuff.

I am no expert on this, but for Saginaw pumps there are two different style shafts. There is a keyway ('73 & earlier) "bolt on" style shaft, and a press on shaft which they began using in '74. Post '73 cars may have either style, not just press on FWIW. If you are considering running aluminum pulleys, I don't think they are made for the press fit style, only the keyway style (probably because the aluminum would not be durable enough and expansion/contraction would create issues). Something to consider when shopping for a new pump.
