whoo hoo. Welcome to the party. I went with the 2004R and haven't regretted it. My DD has gone from 15MPG to over 20MPG and still have the fun on of my original 1-2-3 gears of the stock TH350. I went with a Bowtie tranny and the conversion was simply sweet. Anyway, congrats and enjoy.
Went to an OD 5 speed manual, most times I like to cruise back roads but it is nice to have the option to jump on the e-way and scoot where I need to go in a hurry.
This trans sounds like a good idea to me. I am in the process of an off frame with my 78 and I am looking for up grade options. I currently have a TH350. What is the process to convert mine to a 700R4?
it's not major, but it's not a novice job either..i had help and farmed some out (the transmission rebuild and drive shaft cut)..
i used a 700R4 transmission (mine is out of a '91 chevy pick up). i had it rebuilt, added shift kit, and when installed used an 1800 rpm stall converter (i think 1400 Or 1500 is stock)..
rework the crossmember and cut the drive shaft down a little.
i bought two kits as well - a shifter conversion (to catch all 4 gears) and a lock out kit (vac/elec controlled) ..
